Lake County is home to over 30 miles of shoreline located on Lake Erie, and many significant beaches and trails reside along the shore. Headlands Beach State Park is the largest natural beach in the state of Ohio and boasts nearly 2 million visitors per year. The park contains a mile-long stretch of wildlife, driftwood, and dunes. At the center of the park and the Grand River’s mouth lies the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse, a National Historic Place constructed in 1925 that now serves as a maritime and marine museum. Another significant locale is the Lake Erie Bluffs, consisting of 9,000 feet of both cobble and sand beaches as well as 40-foot beach cliffs.
Another notable natural site to see is the Holden Arboretum, one of the most extensive botanical gardens in the United States. Spanning over 3,600 acres of space and biological diversity, it represents 79 plant families. Two National Natural Landmarks run through the property, and guided hiking tours are available to visitors. Located on tour is Little Mountain, a former site of elegant resort hotels and now home to soaring white pines and angular geological formations.
Many acclaimed and award-winning wineries are in Lake County and the Grand River Valley, including Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, Debonné Vineyards, and Grand River Cellars Winery. The annual Grand River Ice Wine Festival occurs every spring and offers tastings, ice carvings, and jewelry shows.
Located in Lake County are also several historical and heritage sites, including the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, the 20th President of the United States’ home and estate. The property has undergone an extensive, multi-year restoration project and is widely regarded as one of the most accurately detailed 19th-century presidential sites. On the estate, visitors can also expect to see the first-ever presidential library established on their tours.
