Painesville is a quaint town located a short drive from Cleveland. The city, founded after the Revolutionary War by General Edward Paine, has several attractions for visitors and residents alike. While in Painesville, one can visit The Freedom Memorial and Post Office. This attraction honors military personnel and includes a garden and sundial dedicated to the wives of soldiers that fought in the Civil War. A 48ft granite monument, created by R. F. Carter, is located on Liberty Street called the Civil War Memorial and Lincoln Marker. This sculpture is in honor of the Civil War and President Abraham Lincoln’s visit to Painesville in 1861.
Another attraction in Painesville is the monument dedicated to the city’s founder, General Edward Paine. Located on Mentor Avenue, the statue was funded by the Daughters of the Revolution in 1900, one hundred years after the city’s founding. Mentor Avenue also has a historic district of uniquely architectured buildings. These buildings include the Tudor-styled Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed and Breakfast, the Egyptian influenced columns located at the Freedom Memorial and Old Post Office, the Greek Revival-styled Painesville City Hall, and the Italianate architecture of the Sessions House. The St. John’s Baptist Church boasts intricately designed stained glass windows and the First Church Congregational is the second tallest building in Painesville. These attractions are a part of the National Historic District walking tours.
For outdoor lovers, in particular anglers, Steelhead Alley offers the chance to catch the much sought-after Rainbow Trout/Steelhead. Lake Erie College, a private liberal arts college, is also located in the town. Painesville has a plethora of activities and attractions for visitors to this historic city. Memorials to the Civil War & General Edward Paine, historic buildings with mixed architectural styles, walking tours, and active fishing are all offered to visitors of Painesville.
