Mentor, Ohio is a city right on the coast of Lake Erie that is full of parks and history. While you’re there, you have to check out the Headlands Beach State Park, literally the longest public swimming beach in Ohio. It’s a beautiful spot to go for a swim or catch a sunset over the lake.
After hitting the beach, head over to Mentor Avenue, where you can shop at the Great Lakes Mall, or eat at any of the over 150 restaurants in town! On top of all these great retail locations, there are tons of parks in town for whatever activities you enjoy. If you’re into skating, you can check out one of several skate parks in town, or if you love the outdoors, make sure to go to the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina, with hiking and biking trails that give a wonderful view of the Mentor Marsh (as well as rare dune plants!).
No trip to Mentor is complete without seeing what’s going on over at the Civic Center Park. From hockey games to festivals to their Olympic sized pool and waterslide, there’s always something to do.
If you’re a history buff of Lake County, Ohio, you might also be interested to know that President James A. Garfield lived in Mentor during his presidential campaign! You can visit his former estate, now known as the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, right in town. The site boasts the first presidential library in the United States, as well as the first successful “front porch” campaign in the history of the country (a campaign run from a candidate’s home). It is definitely worth stopping by for anyone interested in presidential history.
